Vision: The Department of Sociology as a discipline will lead to research and teaching in emphasizing the stability of populations, the sustainability of energy and natural resource development, and the growth of social diversity. It further helps to

  • To develop in understanding of sociological behaviours among the students and to train them for the betterment of society.
  • To develop a sense of social economic and civic responsibilities towards each other which will contribute towards their educational, social and economic wellbeing.

Mission: The mission of the Department of Sociology is to provide students with the theoretical and substantive knowledge to participate as skilled professionals with the institutions and organizations that shape our diversity and global society.

  • To strengthen and deliver high quality programs in teaching, research and service.
  • The mission of the Department of Sociology is to promote scientific understandings of social life and service. We also aim to develop robust sociological imaginations and critical thinking in our students.
  • Overall it helps contributing to the quality of life and sustainable development local, national regional and global level.

Objectives: The course, with interdisciplinary inclinations starts by providing a strong foundation to students through the introduction of the dominant sociological theories in the first year. This is followed by understanding and application of classical and contemporary theories keeping the Indian context in mind in the second year. The final year will address more practical oriented papers that would benefit students through its multi-disciplinary orientation: Research Methodology, Sociology of Women, Sociology of Urban Communities and Contemporary Social Issues.

Emphasis on internship in the second year is to consolidate the knowledge students have acquired with the intention that they apply it in an empirical study of institutions that provide social service.
